Socceroos Coach Tony Popovic Backs Canberra A-League Bid NOW

UPDATE: Socceroos coach Tony Popovic has just announced his strong support for a Canberra-based A-League Men’s team, asserting that a franchise in the capital has been long overdue. This revelation comes as discussions around ownership for the expansion team intensify, with speculation suggesting that a deal is closer than ever.

Popovic, who played for Canberra Croatia early in his career, made the announcement while in the ACT to unveil the Socceroos squad for upcoming friendlies against New Zealand. The first match is set for Friday, October 13, 2023, at Canberra Stadium at 7:45 PM. As the Socceroos gear up for their journey to the 2024 World Cup in North America, the excitement around a local A-League team is palpable.

“There is an appetite for it, and I’ve always believed there should be a team in the capital,” Popovic stated during a press conference. “We’re getting closer to that. When that day comes, the support will be here.” The coach pointed to the success of local teams like the Raiders as evidence of strong community backing.

As the Socceroos prepare for their clash against the Kiwis, they will welcome emerging talent Nestory Irankunda, who recently impressed with a stunning free kick for Watford in the English Championship. Popovic praised Irankunda’s growth since his last camp, noting, “He’s had a year in Europe, which is a great experience for a young player.”

The upcoming friendlies will also see the introduction of seven debutants, amid injuries to key players such as Jason Geria from Canberra. Popovic emphasized the importance of blending experience with new talent, saying, “We need to make sure that everyone understands what we want with the Socceroos.”

In a notable absence, captain Mat Ryan will miss this squad due to his recent transfer to Levante in Spain’s La Liga. Popovic expressed confidence in Ryan’s readiness to return for future matches, highlighting his experience and fitness.

As the countdown to the Socceroos’ match against New Zealand begins, fans are eager to see how the team develops under Popovic’s leadership. The upcoming matches serve as a critical first step in their World Cup preparation, and the potential establishment of a local A-League team adds a thrilling layer of anticipation for Canberra football supporters.

Stay tuned for more updates as the situation unfolds and the Socceroos embark on their road to the World Cup.
