Job Market Shift: Older Workers Targeted in Retail, Tourism

URGENT UPDATE: Older workers are increasingly in demand in the retail, tourism, and healthcare sectors, as new reports confirm a significant shift in hiring practices aimed at mature job seekers. Career coach Leah Lambart emphasizes that despite ageism concerns, many employers are actively seeking out candidates with experience.

In a recent discussion at the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) Annual Summit in August 2023, leaders highlighted the crucial role older workers play in various industries. Chris Eaton, General Manager of People and Culture at Chobani Australia, stated, “They’re actually our most skilled people… we couldn’t operate without them.” The company’s plant in Dandenong, Victoria, exemplifies this trend, showcasing the value of older employees in the workplace.

The tourism sector is also looking to engage more mature workers as it rebounds from the pandemic, employing around 290,000 people directly and indirectly in Victoria alone. Chris Porter, COO of the Victorian Tourism Industry Council, noted, “The most valued people that we see in our industry are the most mature.” With a significant portion of the workforce lost during COVID-19, this industry sees mature candidates as vital to restoring its workforce.

Lambart urges older job seekers to target industries emphasizing skills over age. “Certain industries … where that lived experience and having a bit of grey hair is probably seen as a positive,” she remarked. She encourages individuals to explore roles in healthcare, community services, and retail, where age diversity is increasingly recognized.

For those entering the job market or changing careers, Lambart advises updating resumes, enhancing LinkedIn profiles, and taking advantage of free technology courses to remain competitive. Programs such as “returnships” are gaining traction, allowing older workers to transition back into employment while leveraging their extensive experience.

A poignant example includes a recent client of Lambart’s who, after being made redundant, secured a new job within just six weeks by focusing on her industry experience. “I just encouraged her to be more proactive,” she said, highlighting the importance of confidence and a tailored approach in the job search.

As the job market evolves, industries are recognizing the immense potential that mature workers bring. With the right strategies in place, older job seekers can navigate this landscape successfully, finding fulfilling roles that value their contributions and expertise.
