More than 20 individuals participated in the Vinnies Community Sleepout at Charles Sturt University on August 29, 2023, to raise funds for homelessness. Participants exchanged their comfortable beds for the open air in a bid to increase awareness of the challenges faced by those without stable housing. The event has already raised nearly $13,000, with opportunities for further donations still available.
Among the participants was business owner Rebecca O’Brien, who described the experience as both challenging and rewarding. “It was chilly and windy, but such a great night,” she remarked. To keep spirits high, attendees engaged in trivia, auctions, card games, and late-night conversations. O’Brien noted, “Once the rain stopped, we set up around 22:00 for the night. We took cover under the awnings, fairly protected from the wind, and used cardboard under our sleeping bags to keep warm.”
O’Brien shared her experience testing a Ruffy Swag, a portable bed designed for individuals experiencing homelessness, which she helped produce in collaboration with Carevan and Uniting. These swags are distributed to those in need, showcasing the event’s broader aim of community support. “What made the event more special was the selfless people who wanted to give back to the community,” she added.
Addressing the ongoing issue of homelessness, O’Brien emphasized the importance of initiatives like the Vinnies Community Sleepout. Such events not only raise crucial funds but also provide participants with a firsthand understanding of the struggles faced by individuals without stable accommodation. “It was a great experience,” she concluded.
The event’s organizer, Lincoln Weir, expressed gratitude for the community’s generosity. “We’re super proud of everyone and the community support,” he stated, highlighting the collective effort in tackling homelessness.
For those interested in contributing, donations can still be made through the Vinnies Community Sleepout website, supporting a cause that continues to resonate across communities.
