Major advancements in electric vehicle (EV) performance have emerged from China, with Xiaomi and Yangwang setting remarkable speed records that challenge established luxury brands. Xiaomi’s SU7 Ultra recently surpassed the electric production car record at Germany’s Nurburgring, outperforming the renowned Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and the Rimac Nevera, while Yangwang shattered an EV top speed record by reaching an impressive 293.54 mph at the ATP test track in Germany.
The Yangwang U9, part of BYD’s high-performance sub-brand, showcases an advanced electric powertrain that is noteworthy for its four motors, each producing a staggering 744 bhp. This configuration allows for nearly 3,000 bhp in total output, with a sophisticated torque vectoring system that optimizes power delivery to each wheel more than 100 times per second. The vehicle also features a DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System, which enhances stability and grip by automatically adjusting the suspension.
In terms of technical innovation, Yangwang is pioneering a 1200V ultra-high-voltage vehicle platform, designed to handle extreme battery discharge scenarios that occur during high-speed attempts. While current high-performance systems operate at 800V, Yangwang’s technology is expected to support rapid charging capabilities from powerful MegaWatt stations. The standard version of the U9, which boasts around 1,300 bhp, is priced at 1.68 million Yuan (approximately $236,000, £193,000, or AU$400,000).
Despite these achievements, skepticism remains among enthusiasts in the US and Europe regarding the seriousness of these Chinese brands. Many argue that producing fast electric cars is relatively simple, and doubt the appeal of vehicles branded under names like Yangwang. Yet, as the automotive landscape shifts towards electrification, brand prestige may no longer hold the same weight it once did.
Recent developments in the industry highlight this trend. For instance, Porsche announced it has halted its Cellforce battery division due to a “global lack of volumes,” indicating challenges in transitioning to electric vehicles as consumer demand declines. This decision raises questions about the future competitiveness of established brands against nimble newcomers like Xiaomi and Yangwang.
Chinese manufacturers are not only advancing in battery technology but are also proving their ability to create high-performance electric vehicles.
