Urgent Women’s Leadership Training Empowers Eco-Consciousness in Indonesia

UPDATE: An urgent training program aimed at empowering women leaders in environmental sustainability took place in Padang, West Sumatra, from July 11 to July 15, 2023. Hosted by Wanita Islam, Indonesia’s leading Islamic women’s organization, this initiative brought together participants from 12 member countries of the Regional Islamic Daw’ah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP).

The program’s focus on enhancing Islamic values pertaining to conservation is more relevant than ever, addressing the critical state of our natural environment. Participants engaged in transformative conversations about eco-consciousness and sustainability, guided by the belief that Islam promotes the protection of our planet’s resources.

Keynote speaker Dato Hajjah Hanifah Hajar Taib, Deputy Minister of Economy of Malaysia and Chairperson of RISEAP, emphasized the necessity for eco-sustainability in today’s world. She urged attendees to champion the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG), which include essential elements like no poverty, good health, clean water, responsible consumption, and climate action.

Dato Taib’s message resonated deeply as she outlined the role each participant can play in fostering sustainable communities. The UNSDGs are often summarized by five key concepts: People, Prosperity, Peace, Partnership, and Planet. These principles reflect the urgent need for collective action to combat environmental degradation.

The program highlighted the rich tradition within Islam that underscores the significance of environmental stewardship. As stated in the Quran, “And the earth, He has assigned it to all living creatures” (Quran 55:10). This teaching serves as a reminder that our use of natural resources is a trust, demanding careful management and respect.

Participants shared their experiences and strategies for implementing eco-friendly practices within their communities, showcasing the human impact of this training. The urgency of environmental action was palpable, as attendees recognized the pressing need for action to safeguard our planet for future generations.

As the world faces escalating environmental challenges, initiatives like this are crucial. The success of this program could inspire similar efforts across Southeast Asia, highlighting the importance of women in leadership roles when it comes to addressing sustainability issues.

What’s Next: Attendees are expected to return to their communities equipped with new knowledge and strategies to promote eco-consciousness and sustainable practices. This training could serve as a model for future initiatives aimed at empowering women and fostering environmental responsibility.

Stay tuned as we continue to follow the developments from this groundbreaking training program.
