McGraw Tower Completes $7 Million Renovation After Two Years

After more than two years of extensive renovations, McGraw Tower at Cornell University is now free of scaffolding and has a striking new roof. The $7 million restoration project not only revitalized the iconic structure but also made significant improvements in weatherproofing and masonry work on the tower and the adjacent Uris Library.

Restoration Highlights and Longevity

Jon Ladley, the director of facilities planning for Cornell University Library, expressed confidence in the durability of the new roof. “Everyone – from the designers and contractors to our campus roofing experts – expects it to last us another 100 years,” he stated. The renovation revealed a robust steel support structure, emphasizing the tower’s commitment to longevity.

The project faced delays largely due to weather conditions and the difficulty in finding skilled roofers capable of executing the intricate work required. As a result, specialist subcontractors were brought in from Ottawa, Ontario.

The overall effort included not just the installation of the new roof but also comprehensive repairs throughout the tower and surrounding facilities. The most time-consuming aspect involved the meticulous removal and replacement of the roof’s lead-coated copper sheets, soldered pans, and wood decking, all of which contribute to the tower’s distinctive pyramidal shape. This roof had not been replaced since the 1930s, leading to decades of repairs necessitated by leaking seams.

A Fresh Look at a Historic Landmark

From a distance, the 173-foot-tall landmark appears much the same, though noticeably cleaner. The masonry now shines brighter, and the four clock faces are crisper and more defined. The new roof retains its historic chevron pattern and deep gray hue, ensuring that it remains in harmony with the architectural heritage of the university.

The renovations not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of McGraw Tower but also improve its structural integrity and resilience against the elements. As the project comes to a conclusion, the Cornell community can look forward to enjoying their historic landmark for generations to come.
