Renowned Designer Giorgio Armani Passes Away at 91

Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91, as confirmed by the Armani Group. The fashion house released a heartfelt statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of its creator and founder, describing him as a “tireless driving force” behind the brand.

Armani passed away at home, marking the end of a remarkable career that defined modern Italian style and elegance. Known for his innovative designs, he successfully blended artistic flair with astute business acumen, leading a company that generated approximately €2.3 billion (around $A4.1 billion) in annual revenue.

Throughout his illustrious career, Armani expanded his influence beyond fashion. He owned a number of bars, clubs, and restaurants, and was also associated with the basketball team EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, commonly known as Olympia Milano. Since 1998, he has opened over 20 restaurants across cities like Milan and Tokyo, and launched two hotels—one in Dubai in 2009 and another in Milan in 2010.

His recent health challenges were significant; he had to withdraw from participating in his group’s shows at Milan’s Men’s Fashion Week in June 2023, marking the first time in his career that he missed such an event. Despite his declining health, Armani remained a hands-on leader, ensuring that he oversaw every detail of his collections and business operations, from advertising strategies to adjusting models’ hairstyles before they walked the runway.

Known affectionately as “Re Giorgio” or “King Giorgio,” he often emphasized the importance of practicality in fashion, stating, “I design for real people. There is no virtue whatsoever in creating clothes and accessories that are not practical.” His philosophy resonated with a diverse clientele, solidifying his legacy as a designer who truly understood the needs of everyday individuals.

In honor of his life and contributions to the fashion industry, a funeral chamber will be set up in Milan on Saturday and Sunday. Following this, a private funeral will take place at a later date, according to statements from the Armani Group.

As the world reflects on his profound impact, Giorgio Armani’s legacy as a pioneer of modern fashion and a symbol of Italian elegance will undoubtedly endure.
