UPDATE: The Castlemaine Magpies have clinched their fourth consecutive premiership in the Central Victorian Football League (CVFL) following a commanding 27-point victory against Golden Square on July 14, 2023. The match, held at the QEO, showcased Castlemaine’s dominance as they led from the opening whistle, finishing with a score of 4.12 (36) to 1.3 (9).
The Magpies’ success marks their fourth title since joining the CVFL in 2022, solidifying their reputation as a powerhouse in the league. Coach Jordan Cochrane, who has been at the helm throughout this winning streak, expressed immense pride in the team’s achievement, particularly as this final featured three of his siblings: captain Tiahna Cochrane, Ella Cochrane, and Hannah Cochrane. All four of Castlemaine’s goals were scored by the Cochrane sisters, with Hannah netting two goals and Tiahna and Ella contributing one each.
In a match that started slowly for both teams, Castlemaine established control early on but struggled to convert opportunities. Golden Square’s only score in the first half came from a behind, while the Magpies maintained pressure, leading to a solid performance from midfielder Maeve Tupper, who was named the CVFL Medal winner for best on ground.
Despite their inaccuracy in front of goal, Castlemaine’s defense proved impenetrable. Golden Square’s only goal came midway through the third quarter, but the Magpies answered back with a goal from Tiahna Cochrane to secure their victory. Coach Cochrane noted, “It was probably one of our uglier wins over the past four years, but that’s what’s great about our side; it’s so versatile and we can change things around when we need to.”
The emotional weight of the victory was palpable, especially for Tupper, who celebrated her second premiership win with Castlemaine and the opportunity to play alongside her sister Aisling, who returns after an ACL injury. Tupper stated, “Golden Square’s pressure was really intense… I probably didn’t feel confident that we had it until probably five minutes to go.”
With this latest triumph, Castlemaine’s record now stands at an impressive 51 wins from 55 games in the CVFL. The excitement didn’t end there; the grand final night also featured a thrilling under-18s match where Woorinen edged out Sandhurst by just one point, showcasing the competitive spirit of the league.
This victory not only highlights Castlemaine’s athletic prowess but also cements their legacy in the CVFL, inspiring the next generation of players and fans alike. As the celebrations continue, all eyes will be on the Magpies as they look to extend their dominance in the upcoming season.
