Young Cherrypickers Secure 28-14 Win, Keep Title Hopes Alive

UPDATE: The Young Cherrypickers have achieved a crucial 28-14 victory over the Temora Dragons, keeping their title hopes alive just six days after a devastating 46-18 loss to Gundagai. This decisive win took place on October 14, 2023, at Alfred Oval, and marks a significant turnaround as the Cherrypickers advance to the preliminary final.

Young stormed out of the gate, scoring three tries in the first 25 minutes, with captain-coach Tom Giles opening the account. The Cherrypickers took a commanding 16-0 lead into halftime, showcasing their determination to rebound after last week’s defeat.

Despite a spirited fightback from the Dragons, who narrowed the gap to just two points with tries from Timoci Vatubuli, Nick Bett, and Will McDermott, the Cherrypickers maintained their composure. Giles expressed relief and pride, stating,

“We started strong…we come good and we toughed it out.”

Even with star playmaker Tom Demeio limited due to illness, Young proved their resilience. A try from Jayle Hogan eased the pressure before Boro Navori sealed the victory late in the match.

The win not only propels Young into the next round but also signifies the end of the season for Temora, marking a bittersweet farewell for co-coach Josh McCrone. After an impressive career, including 161 NRL games and a return to local rugby, McCrone’s journey with the Dragons concludes after they ended a 14-year finals drought last season.

Looking ahead, the Cherrypickers now prepare to face the loser of the major semi-final between the Kangaroos and Gundagai at Twickenham. Giles emphasized the need for consistency, stating,

“We can’t seem to string a good 80 minutes, but we’ll focus on that.”

As the finals continue, all eyes will be on Young as they aim for back-to-back grand final appearances. This pivotal match not only highlights their fighting spirit but also sets the stage for an exhilarating finish to the season.
