Gold Coast Claims Thrilling One-Point Win Over Fremantle

UPDATE: In an electrifying finish, the Gold Coast Suns secured their first-ever AFL finals victory, defeating the Fremantle Dockers by just one point, 11.14 (80) to 12.7 (79), at Optus Stadium on July 15, 2023. The game concluded with a heart-stopping moment as retiring champion David Swallow kicked a behind with only nine seconds left on the clock.

Fremantle, who had rallied from a staggering 26-point deficit late in the third quarter to briefly take a six-point lead, faced a dramatic turn of events in the final moments. With 57,507 fans on the edge of their seats, Suns defender Mac Andrew leveled the scores with a crucial mark and goal with just over a minute remaining.

Swallow, who was subbed on early in the last quarter, was awarded a free kick after being tackled without the ball. His set shot from 50 meters initially appeared to be a game-winning goal, but after review, it was ruled a behind. This decision left Fremantle with only nine seconds to make a last-ditch effort, but the Suns’ defense held firm, sealing the exhilarating victory.

The match marked the end of an era for Fremantle’s dual Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe, who received a guard of honour post-game, capping off a celebrated career. As for the Suns, they now advance to face the Brisbane Lions in a highly anticipated Q-Clash semi-final at the Gabba next Saturday night.

Throughout the match, Suns forward Bailey Humphrey shone bright, scoring three goals, while midfielders Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson contributed significantly with 34 and 32 disposals respectively. Meanwhile, Fremantle’s Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw also delivered notable performances with 35 and 32 disposals respectively, highlighting the intensity of this thrilling elimination final.

Both teams entered the match with contrasting playoff experiences. Fremantle had a combined 51 games of finals experience, while the Suns featured only three players with any finals history. Yet, it was the Suns who appeared unfazed in the early stages, with both teams managing only one goal each in a tense first quarter.

As the match progressed, the Suns took control, scoring seven goals in the second term and entering halftime with a commanding 25-point lead. Despite their strong start, the Suns faltered in the third quarter, allowing Fremantle to claw back into contention with crucial goals from Isaiah Dudley, who scored twice to reduce the deficit.

In a final quarter filled with tension, Fremantle managed to surge ahead, but the Suns demonstrated resilience and composure to secure the win.

This unforgettable victory not only marks a historic moment for the Gold Coast Suns but also sets the stage for their next challenge against a formidable Brisbane Lions team. Fans are eager to see if the Suns can carry this momentum forward as they vie for further playoff glory.
