Gisborne Bulldogs Triumph Over South Bendigo in Semi-Final Showdown

In a gripping semi-final of the Bendigo Football League, the Gisborne Bulldogs defeated the South Bendigo Bloods with a decisive score of 14.9 (93) to 8.13 (61). The match took place on March 3, 2024, under challenging muddy conditions that favored the Bulldogs, who showcased their resilience despite significant adversity.

Gisborne entered the match with a notable disadvantage, missing key players, including their captain, Jack Reaper, who suffered an ACL injury prior to the game. This loss added to a long list of season-ending injuries that have plagued the team, impacting several starting players such as Braidon Blake and Shane Clough. Despite these setbacks, the Bulldogs made a strong start, taking control of the game early on and establishing a comfortable lead that they maintained throughout.

The Bloods, while determined, struggled to convert their opportunities into points, managing only 0.6 in the first quarter. They found their first score through Anthony Zimmerman, who soccered a goal early in the second term. However, Gisborne responded quickly, demonstrating their capacity to dominate the game even in the absence of their star defender.

As the match progressed, the Bulldogs’ defensive unit, led by Zachary Vescovi, successfully contained the Bloods’ forwards, limiting Brock Harvey and Steven Stroobants to just three goals combined. The match featured a turning point in the second quarter when South Bendigo reduced the margin to just six points. However, a series of missed opportunities allowed the Bulldogs to pull away again.

By half-time, Gisborne had extended their lead to 28 points, a margin that reflected their superior efficiency on both ends of the field. They further increased this lead to a game-high 41 points shortly after the break. Despite a late surge from South Bendigo, the Bulldogs maintained their composure, securing a place in the preliminary final against Eaglehawk on March 9, 2024.

The victory not only highlights Gisborne’s tenacity in the face of adversity but also sets the stage for an exciting match against Eaglehawk, as they aim to capitalize on their recent momentum. The Bloods, on the other hand, conclude their season, reflecting on the challenges they faced throughout.

With this win, the Bulldogs prove that they are a force to be reckoned with in the league, ready to continue their journey towards the championship title.
