URGENT UPDATE: The Griffith Multicultural Festival is set to take place on October 17 at Memorial Park, with local migrants sharing powerful stories about how this vibrant event has enriched their lives and fostered community connections.
This annual festival is more than just a celebration; it’s a lifeline for many newcomers in Griffith. Suwadey Basiran, a Malaysian migrant who has lived in Griffith for a decade, emphasizes the festival’s role in building community ties. “It’s amazing how it brings people together and adds richness to this beautiful city,” he stated. His involvement has deepened since he joined the organizing team in 2019.
The excitement is palpable as participants gear up for this year’s event. “When I first came to Griffith, I didn’t know many people. I saw the festival and thought I must join this event,” Basiran recalled. The festival has grown exponentially, with attendance skyrocketing over the years, and last year’s turnout left little room to move.
Moana Mataitoga, representing the Fijian community, echoed these sentiments, noting that the festival is crucial for visibility and inclusivity. “It’s a great avenue for inclusivity; I’ve been attending the event for six years,” she said. For Mataitoga, celebrating her culture through dance, food, and hospitality is vital to her family’s integration into the community. “Fijians are very happy and kind people, something we like to share,” she added, reflecting on the warm welcome her family has received since moving from Fiji.
Local leaders are eager to highlight the festival’s importance. Peter Byrne, Vice President of the Multicultural Council of Griffith, calls the festival a “must-attend” for newcomers, providing exposure to opportunities they might not know about.
The event is not just for cultural showcases; it’s also an opportunity for local organizations. Sue Fordham of the Griffith Croquet Club encourages sports clubs to participate, pointing out that the festival is an excellent way to boost membership. “We had croquet set up at the previous event, and so many people were eager to give it a go,” she said.
The festival will kick off with a parade the following day, and organizers are eager for participation from schools, clubs, and businesses. For those interested in taking part, contact Carmel La Rocca at 0412811343 or via email at [email protected].
This year’s Griffith Multicultural Festival promises to be more than just an event—it’s set to be a powerful celebration of community, culture, and connection. The countdown is on as preparations intensify for what is anticipated to be an unforgettable gathering.
