Thousands Gather to Honor Detective Leading Senior Constable Thompson

Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson was laid to rest on September 5, 2023, during a poignant funeral that attracted approximately 3,000 mourners in Melbourne. Thompson, a respected veteran of the police force, tragically lost his life on August 26, 2023, while serving in Porepunkah. The ceremony, attended by his partner, Sergeant Lisa Thompson, and many colleagues, reflected on his profound impact on both the community and his family.

Sergeant Thompson expressed her deep sorrow, recalling the moment they first met in 2016, which she described as life-changing. “Words cannot convey the depth of sorrow and grief that his loss brings,” she stated. She fondly remembered their last weekend together, saying, “I will be brave. I will love you, I will cherish every moment that I spent with you.” Her heartfelt tribute resonated with many in attendance, highlighting the personal loss felt by those close to him.

Born in Bendigo, Neal Thompson was known for his adventurous spirit and love for the outdoors. His sister, Lois Kirk, shared memories of their childhood adventures, which included camping and fishing. She noted, “He was lucky to have two families, the police family and ours.” Reflecting on his police career, Kirk emphasized how proud their parents were when he graduated from the academy.

Thompson began his policing career on September 14, 1987, at the age of 21. Over the years, he served in various roles, including the Fraud Squad and the Wangaratta Crime Investigation Unit. His dedication to service earned him numerous accolades, including recognition for his role in the safe return of a kidnapped child. Fellow officer Detective Senior Constable Tim Doyle praised Thompson’s unique ability to connect with both victims and suspects, stating, “If you needed something found at a search warrant, you took Thommo with you.”

Colleagues described him as a dependable and reliable officer, with Leading Senior Constable Paul Campbell comparing him to an old Massey Ferguson tractor. Campbell noted Thompson’s resilience, recalling his survival through numerous adversities, including being shot and stabbed. “We thought he was indestructible,” he remarked.

The funeral service was marked by an outpouring of support from the community and fellow officers. Police lined the streets surrounding the academy, saluting as Thompson’s coffin was carried away. Many attendees spoke of his adventurous spirit, with friends recalling stories of fishing trips and daring escapades in the Australian wilderness.

The investigation into Thompson’s tragic death continues, with many in the community awaiting answers. As tributes poured in from all corners, it was clear that Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for the profound personal connections he forged throughout his life. His legacy as a protector and friend will endure in the hearts of those he touched.
