Marshawn Kneeland, a defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys, has died at the age of 24, the team announced on Thursday morning. The organization expressed its deep sorrow in a statement, saying, “It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning. Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”
The circumstances surrounding Kneeland’s death have not been disclosed. The young athlete was a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, selected as the 56th overall choice after a standout college career at Western Michigan University.

Kneeland recently made headlines in the Cowboys’ game against the Arizona Cardinals, where he scored the team’s first touchdown by recovering a blocked punt in the end zone. This season, he recorded 15 tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss, and six quarterback hurries, despite missing two games due to injury.
As a rookie in 2023, Kneeland faced challenges with injuries, missing six games due to a knee issue. He finished that season with 17 tackles, two tackles for loss, and notable contributions including 13 quarterback pressures, a pass breakup, and a fumble recovery.

Kneeland’s early career was marked by impressive statistics. At Godwin Heights High School in Wyoming, Michigan, he set records for tackles, sacks, and tackles for loss. During his collegiate career, he played in 38 games, achieving 27.5 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, three forced fumbles, and three pass deflections. In 2023, he was honored as a second-team All-Mid-American Conference selection, amassing 57 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 7.5 tackles for loss in just nine games.
This tragic loss marks the second time in recent years that the Cowboys have faced the death of a player during the season. In 2012, linebacker Jerry Brown died in a car crash involving teammate Josh Brent.
The Cowboys are currently on their bye week and are not scheduled to resume practice until Monday. The organization is expected to honor Kneeland’s memory as they navigate this difficult period.
