Trackhouse Racing Drivers Face Scrutiny After Controversial Tactic

A pair of drivers from Trackhouse Racing have come under scrutiny following their controversial actions during the NASCAR Cup Series race on July 30, 2023, at World Wide Technology Raceway. After the race, both Ross Chastain and Shane Van Gisbergen exhibited unusual behavior on the cool-down lap, drifting up against the wall and then through the grass while navigating towards the emergency lane leading to pit road.

The incident did not go unnoticed. Alex Bowman, a driver for Hendrick Motorsports, observed their actions in real time and commented over the radio, “Hey, the Trackhouse cars are driving through the grass. That’s kind of cool.” This remark has raised questions regarding the intent behind their actions, as it was broadcast to those listening via scanner or radio applications.

As the racing community awaits a response from NASCAR, a competition meeting is scheduled for the morning of August 1, 2023. Both Brad Moran, the managing director of the Cup Series, and Elton Sawyer, the Senior Vice President of Competition, are expected to address the issue during their weekly availability on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Observers are keen to hear whether any formal action will be taken regarding the incident.

The technique of driving through the grass and rubber marbles is not unprecedented in motorsports. Some drivers use this strategy to add weight before post-race inspection, as rubber and dirt can cling to hot tires. This tactic can potentially influence the car’s weight during inspection, which is critical in a competitive environment.

Chastain and Van Gisbergen finished the race in 24th and 25th positions respectively. Both drivers are competing in the playoffs, with Chastain currently sitting 19 points above the cutline and Van Gisbergen 15 points below. Following the race, they were required to undergo inspection, which adds another layer of scrutiny to their post-race actions.

As the situation develops, the implications for Chastain and Van Gisbergen could be significant, not just for their playoff standings but also for their reputations within the sport. The outcome of the upcoming competition meeting may provide clarity on whether NASCAR will take further steps in response to their actions on the track.
