URGENT UPDATE: Two teenage boys have been charged with serious driving offences following a dramatic police chase in Kununurra that occurred early this morning. The incident unfolded at approximately 2:00 AM on Wednesday when local police spotted a green Toyota Camry, believed to be stolen, on Carbeen Street.
Authorities report that when police activated their emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, the driver fled the scene, leading officers on a chaotic pursuit through various streets before ultimately abandoning the vehicle on Flametree Street. Shortly thereafter, police apprehended a 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy a short distance away. The younger boy was charged with driving offences, while the older boy faces charges related to vehicle theft.
This incident is part of a troubling pattern in the region; just days earlier, Kununurra experienced another police chase involving four teenage boys aged 12 to 15. These boys allegedly rammed a police vehicle with a stolen car, injuring two officers who were later treated for minor injuries and released from Kununurra Hospital.
In a separate incident over the weekend, a police car in Broome was also deliberately rammed by a driver of a stolen vehicle, who then fled into nearby bushland. Thankfully, no one was injured in this incident, and no charges have been filed yet.
Police in Kununurra are actively investigating the most recent chase and are urging anyone with information or video evidence to contact Crime Stoppers immediately. The situation is growing increasingly concerning, as authorities have reported three separate police pursuits involving stolen vehicles in just the past week.
In a statement to the Broome Advertiser, Kimberley District Superintendent John Hutchinson emphasized that police will “continue to deploy sufficient resources to apprehend and put before the courts any violent offenders who put the safety of the community at risk.”
As investigations continue, the community is left reeling from these alarming incidents. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
