BREAKING: Former Israeli hostage Eli Sharabi delivered a powerful message of trauma and resilience at the Jewish National Fund Victoria annual event in Melbourne on September 5, 2023. Approximately 1,300 attendees gathered at the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation to support crucial rebuilding projects in Israel, following the devastating attacks that began on October 7, 2023.
The Jewish National Fund is currently fundraising for over 20 projects aimed at restoring communities in southern and northern Israel. These efforts include the restoration of water reservoirs in Nahal Oz, establishing therapeutic spaces in Nir Oz, and providing vital mental health support in Kiryat Shmona.
During the event, former soldiers Uriel and Almog shared their inspiring journey of rebuilding Kibbutz Manara, which has expanded from just five members to 100, honoring the legacy of fallen soldiers.
Sharabi, who endured 491 days as a hostage in Gaza, recounted the harrowing details of his abduction and captivity in a discussion with journalist Nadav Eyal. His emotional account revealed the profound loss he faced, including the tragic deaths of his wife Lianne and two daughters, Yahel and Noiya, at the hands of terrorists. Sharabi’s brother’s remains are still held in Gaza. His memoir, titled Hostage, is set for release in English on October 7.
In a chilling reflection, Sharabi described the constant fear he experienced: “You fear for your life every day, every minute.” He vividly recalled the moment he was forced into a tunnel hidden within a mosque and the brutal beatings he endured. Despite the horror, Sharabi made a pivotal decision to focus on survival and urged fellow hostages to find something positive each day.
“Appreciate every moment that you have as free people, because freedom is priceless,” he emphasized. “It’s not material possessions that matter; it’s your loved ones, your family, and your friends.”
Eyal responded with admiration, stating, “You managed to stay down there in the tunnels in the dungeons of Hamas with hope and resilience, and if you didn’t give up, how can we?”
The evening featured stirring performances by survivor Hagit Yaso, winner of Israel’s Kochav Nolad (A Star is Born) in 2011, who captivated the audience with an emotional rendition of Hatikvah.
The Jewish National Fund continues to mobilize support for its annual campaign, urging the community to contribute to the rebuilding efforts. For donations and more information, visit jnf.org.au/annualcampaign2025.
