Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan Launches China Strategy in Beijing

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has officially launched her China strategy during her inaugural visit to Beijing. This significant trip marks a pivotal moment in strengthening ties between the state of Victoria and China, focusing on enhancing economic collaboration and cultural exchange.

During her visit on March 15, 2024, Allan outlined several key initiatives aimed at bolstering trade, investment, education, and tourism between Victoria and China. The strategy is designed to tap into the vast opportunities offered by one of Australia’s largest trading partners.

Key Focus Areas of the Strategy

The newly unveiled strategy emphasizes three main areas: trade, education, and tourism. Allan highlighted that Victoria exported goods worth approximately AUD 12 billion to China in the previous year, underscoring the importance of this relationship. The government aims to increase this figure by promoting Victorian products and services in Chinese markets.

In education, the strategy seeks to attract more Chinese students to Victorian universities, a crucial sector that significantly contributes to the state’s economy. Allan noted that Chinese students currently comprise over 40% of international enrollments in Victoria, making this demographic vital for the local education sector.

Tourism is another focal point, with the strategy aiming to boost visitor numbers from China, which has historically been a top source of international tourists for Victoria. The government plans to enhance marketing efforts and create more direct flight routes to facilitate travel.

Strengthening Diplomatic Ties

Allan’s visit is also intended to reinforce diplomatic ties, with meetings scheduled with key Chinese officials. These discussions will explore potential collaborations in various sectors, including technology and environmental sustainability.

The Premier stated, “Strengthening our relationship with China is essential for the future prosperity of Victoria. This strategy lays the groundwork for long-term partnerships that will benefit our economy and communities.”

This visit comes at a time when Australia and China are navigating complex diplomatic waters. Allan’s government aims to present a unified front in fostering positive relations while addressing any underlying tensions.

The unveiling of this strategy is seen as a proactive step towards enhancing Victoria’s standing in the Asia-Pacific region. With ongoing shifts in global trade dynamics, fostering strong relationships with China remains a priority for the Victorian government.

As Allan continues her visit, the outcomes of her discussions and initiatives will likely shape Victoria’s economic landscape in the years to come. The focus on trade, education, and tourism is expected to yield significant benefits, contributing to both local and national prosperity.
