The San Francisco 49ers will face the New Orleans Saints without starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who has been ruled out due to injuries. Coach Kyle Shanahan officially announced Purdy’s absence on Friday, confirming that veteran Mac Jones will start in his place for the game this Sunday.
Purdy did not participate in any practice sessions this week as he deals with injuries to his left shoulder and toe, sustained during last week’s victory against the Seattle Seahawks. Shanahan indicated that the toe injury, resembling turf toe, is particularly concerning and may keep Purdy sidelined for several weeks. General manager John Lynch stated on KNBR radio that Purdy’s condition is viewed as a “week-to-week” situation.
With Purdy unavailable, Jones has taken all the starting offensive practice reps from Wednesday to Friday. This matchup against the Saints will mark his first start as a 49er after signing a two-year, $7 million contract in March. Shanahan expressed confidence in Jones, stating, “Mac’s been awesome. Our team really believes in him.”
Jones, selected as the No. 15 overall pick by the New England Patriots in the 2021 NFL Draft, has had a mixed career so far. He started seven games for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, recording eight touchdowns and eight interceptions, resulting in a career-low passer rating of 36.6. This followed a promising rookie season, where he achieved a 56.9 passer rating, but he struggled in his two subsequent seasons with New England.
Upon joining the 49ers, Jones viewed his role as an opportunity to revitalize his career within Shanahan’s offensive system. Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak praised Jones for his openness to coaching, stating, “He’s been really impressive since he walked in the door… you’ve seen the growth.”
In response to Purdy’s absence, the 49ers plan to promote practice squad quarterback Adrian Martinez to the active roster as Jones’ backup. Martinez, who entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2023, has spent time with both the Detroit Lions and New York Jets but has yet to see game action. He was previously elevated to the Jets’ active roster last year but did not play.
Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, formerly the head coach of the Jets, commended Martinez’s potential, noting, “He’s got a live arm, he’s athletic… he’s a willing learner but he’s a good player.”
The challenge for Jones and Martinez is compounded by additional injuries on the 49ers’ roster. Tight end George Kittle has been placed on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury, while receiver Jauan Jennings (shoulder) and left tackle Trent Williams (knee) are both questionable for the game after missing practice earlier in the week.
Regarding Purdy’s possible return, Lynch provided updates on his recovery, stating, “Brock is doing well… he’s doing everything he can to get back out there as soon as possible.” The team continues to monitor Purdy’s condition closely as they prepare for their upcoming matchup.
