UPDATE: A massive rally organized by far-right activist Tommy Robinson in London has erupted into violence, leading to nine arrests as clashes between his supporters and police intensified. The turmoil occurred at the Unite the Kingdom rally, where approximately 110,000 attendees gathered, according to the Metropolitan Police.

The situation escalated as a small faction of Robinson’s supporters clashed with police who were attempting to separate them from a counter-protest organized by Stand Up To Racism, which attracted about 5,000 participants. Reports indicate that several police officers were assaulted with punches, kicks, and bottles thrown from the fringes of the rally.

As violence surged, police confirmed that over 1,600 officers were deployed to manage the escalating tensions, with an additional 500 officers brought in from nearby forces. “We continue to see significant aggression directed at officers by Unite the Kingdom protesters,” the police stated on the X platform.

The protest, which began largely peacefully, took a turn in the late afternoon when Robinson’s supporters began throwing objects at the counter-protesters and attempted to breach barriers set up to maintain order. Earlier efforts by police to control the crowd included the use of force to prevent the crowd-control fence from being breached.

“We want our country back,” chanted Robinson’s supporters, waving the St George’s flag and the Union Jack, reflecting the growing nationalistic sentiment.

In a controversial twist, Elon Musk, owner of Tesla and X, made a video appearance at the rally, calling for a change in government and criticizing what he referred to as the “woke mind virus.” His involvement has sparked significant media attention amid the ongoing political discourse surrounding migration in the UK.

As the scene unfolded, counter-protesters were seen heckling a man who was escorted away by police, blood visible on his face. The circumstances surrounding his injury remain unclear, adding to the chaotic atmosphere of the day.

While the crowd size at the Unite the Kingdom rally was significant, it fell short of the estimated 300,000 attendees at a recent pro-Palestinian protest in November 2023. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, has a controversial history as a leading figure in the far-right movement in Britain, known for his strong nationalist and anti-migrant views.

Today’s events come against a backdrop of increasing tensions over migrant crossings in the English Channel, with several protests in recent months turning violent. Many demonstrators at the Unite the Kingdom rally expressed their frustrations with signs reading “Stop the boats” and “Enough is enough, save our children.”

Counter-protesters, meanwhile, rallied with messages advocating for refugees, holding signs that read “refugees welcome” and “smash the far right.” These opposing sentiments underscore the deep divisions currently present within British society regarding immigration and national identity.

Robinson’s supporters had previously been urged not to engage in violence, as he attempted to maintain control over the event. His last planned rally in October 2023 was canceled after he faced jail time for contempt of court related to defamatory claims against a Syrian refugee.

As the situation continues to develop, the Metropolitan Police are likely to increase their presence in the area, and further arrests may be imminent. Observers are urged to stay informed as more updates become available regarding today’s unrest and its implications for the ongoing national conversation about immigration and nationalism in the UK.
