Colbinabbin Claims Netball Championship in Dominant 72-41 Victory

UPDATE: Colbinabbin has won the Heathcote District League A grade netball premiership with a stunning 72-41 victory over Mount Pleasant on July 15, 2023, marking a flawless season with an unblemished record of 18-0. This decisive win at the Huntly Recreation Reserve not only clinches the championship but also erases the disappointment of previous grand final losses in 2023 and 2024.

The Grasshoppers dominated the match, showcasing their prowess by maintaining a lead throughout all four quarters. After a competitive start, where Mount Pleasant trailed by just three goals at 15-12 in the first quarter, Colbinabbin surged ahead, extending their lead to ten goals by halftime at 31-21.

As the game progressed, Colbinabbin’s relentless pressure overwhelmed their opponents, outscoring Mount Pleasant 20-9 in the third quarter and finishing strong in the final quarter with a 10-goal margin. Coach Jen McIntyre expressed her pride in the team’s performance, urging them to reach the 70-goal mark by the end.

In a moment of reflection, McIntyre stated, “The hunger burned pretty deeply after our previous losses. We’ve played together for a long time, focusing on our strengths and making necessary tweaks.” The victory is particularly gratifying for the young squad, whose key player, Matilda McIntyre, was awarded best on court. She praised her teammates for their collective effort, emphasizing their “patience and composure” that propelled them to victory.

The match underscored Colbinabbin’s dominance throughout the season, with an average winning margin of 44 goals. Mount Pleasant coach Anthea McCleary acknowledged her team’s effort, stating they started strong but struggled to maintain pace against Colbinabbin’s well-drilled squad. “They’re a very well-balanced team, and every player contributes,” she noted.

In a remarkable day for the Hawks at Huntly, they also celebrated victories in all four other netball grand finals, reinforcing the club’s strength in the league. The A reserve game saw the Hawks narrowly edge out Colbinabbin 53-52, while also claiming titles in B grade and under-17 categories.

Colbinabbin’s triumph marks a significant turnaround after their previous championship disappointments. As the team looks ahead, they aim to build on this success, fueled by the experience gained in this victorious campaign.

With this championship, the Grasshoppers have firmly established themselves as a powerhouse in the league, showcasing their skill, teamwork, and resilience. As fans celebrate, all eyes will be on next season to see if Colbinabbin can replicate their flawless performance.
