Launceston Bids Farewell to Charitable Leader Peter Doddy, 88

Launceston has lost a cherished figure in the community with the passing of Peter Doddy, who died on August 25, 2023, at the age of 88. Known for his extensive charitable work and dedication to the local community, Doddy’s influence reached far beyond his roles as a former West Tamar Councillor and airline sales manager.

Doddy’s journey began on October 10, 1936, when he was born in Launceston. He attended Invermay Primary and Brooks High schools before starting his career as a signwriter. He later joined Trans Australia Airlines (now part of Qantas), where he worked for 26 years. His efforts included facilitating direct flights between Launceston and the Gold Coast, which significantly boosted local tourism.

His daughter, Tracy Hargraves, shared that despite being given a “very limited time” to live in October 2021, he defied expectations. “He said, ‘I’m going to die when I’m ready,’ and he lasted four more years,” Hargraves noted. His commitment to his family and community kept him engaged in charitable events long after his prognosis.

Peter Doddy served for 13 years on the West Tamar Council and spent a decade with City Mission, where he prepared meals for those in need, especially during Christmas. His philanthropic endeavors included founding the City of Launceston Basketball Club, raising over $600,000 for the Moonbeam Foundation, and supporting organizations like Camp Quality and Canteen.

His daughter highlighted that Doddy was not only a community leader but also a devoted family man. He had three children with his late wife, Nancy, and was later supported by his partner, Lonnie. The family continued to cherish his love and playful spirit, as he often treated his five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren to sweets and playful outings.

In the community, Doddy was frequently seen engaging with children, embodying his belief in giving back. “He particularly cared about the underprivileged and unprivileged children,” Hargraves remarked. “That’s just his personality—to do it. That’s all he’s ever wanted to do.”

A celebration of Doddy’s life took place at the Punchbowl Christian Centre on September 5, 2023. Attendees shared numerous anecdotes, illustrating his kindness and commitment to helping others, regardless of their background. His legacy of caring for the less fortunate will leave a lasting mark on Launceston.

As the community mourns the loss of Peter Doddy, many reflect on the profound impact he had on the lives of those around him. His work was a testament to his belief in the strength of community and charity, ensuring that Launceston remains a better place for all.
