Urgent Update: Melbourne Extends Funding Deadline for Indian Centre

UPDATE: The deadline for submitting expressions of interest (EOI) for the $2.4 million funding aimed at establishing an Indian community centre in Melbourne’s West has been officially extended. The new closing date for proposals is now set for 3:00 PM on Wednesday, 12 November 2025. This crucial extension allows Indian community organizations additional time to prepare their applications, vital for developing culturally specific spaces that foster community connection.

The funding initiative will support infrastructure costs related to building and managing the Indian community centre, which is essential for serving the growing population in the western suburbs of Melbourne. Notably, the eligible local government areas have expanded. In addition to Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, and Wyndham, applications will now be accepted from Greater Geelong, Hume, Macedon Ranges, Melbourne, Merri-bek, Moonee Valley, and Moorabool.

In a parallel initiative, the government is also inviting expressions of interest from Indian community organizations in Melbourne’s south-east, with the same funding amount of $2.4 million available for developing a community centre in Central Dandenong as part of the Revitalising Central Dandenong precinct. These new facilities aim to empower the Indian community by providing spaces to celebrate culture, build connections, and foster a sense of belonging.

The eligibility criteria for organizations remain strict: applicants must be non-profit entities and are required to match the funding dollar for dollar. To qualify for the full $2.4 million, organizations must demonstrate an equivalent amount in funding, ensuring financial commitment to the projects. Additionally, if the total project cost exceeds $4.8 million, organizations must provide proof of funds covering the additional expenses.

The Victorian Government emphasizes its commitment to supporting vibrant Indian communities by ensuring access to culturally appropriate and inclusive spaces. The EOI process is competitive, with a focus on identifying projects poised to commence physical work within a year. Organizations are encouraged to own the property or land designated for the community centre to qualify.

As this funding opportunity unfolds, community leaders and organizations are urged to take swift action to secure their proposals ahead of the new deadline. The impact of these developments could reshape how the Indian community engages and thrives in Melbourne, making this an urgent call to action for all eligible organizations to step forward and submit their applications.
