Trump Embarks on Historic UK Visit Amid Royal Ceremony and Protests

On March 13, 2024, former President Donald Trump began his state visit to the United Kingdom, marked by a ceremonial welcome featuring royal pageantry and significant protests. Arriving at Windsor Castle aboard Marine One, Trump was greeted by King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and other members of the royal family, including Prince William and Princess Catherine.

The visit commenced with a grand procession in a gilded Irish State Coach, a carriage typically reserved for the State Opening of Parliament. This royal carriage, used at notable occasions such as the late Queen Elizabeth II’s wedding, signified the importance of the event. Accompanied by more than 1,000 UK service members, Trump received a royal salute, followed by a 41-gun salute and bagpipe music echoing through the castle grounds.

Military Display and Diplomatic Discussions Planned

Following the ceremonial welcome, the day’s events are set to include a military display featuring a flyover of US and UK F-35 aircraft. Later, a white-tie banquet will take place, where both Trump and the king are expected to deliver speeches. This event will host the largest honour guard ever assembled for a UK state visit, with a total of 120 horses and 1,300 British military personnel participating in the welcome.

As he departed the White House, Trump expressed enthusiasm about his UK relations, calling the visit a “great honour.” He remarked, “They say Windsor Castle’s the ultimate, right?”

Protests, however, loom over the celebrations. Prior to Trump’s arrival, police arrested four individuals on suspicion of “malicious communications” after a controversial image linking Trump to deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was projected onto Windsor Castle. Additional protests are scheduled to occur in central London, led by the Stop Trump Coalition.

Economic Partnerships and Political Context

Trump’s visit coincides with critical diplomatic discussions with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The agenda includes negotiations on trade terms and the ongoing war in Ukraine, although significant breakthroughs are not anticipated. Reports indicate that the UK has scaled back its goals regarding tariffs on British steel, shelving plans to eliminate them entirely.

In a bid to strengthen economic ties, Trump is expected to announce over $10 billion in new economic deals during his visit. Additionally, British drugmaker GSK has pledged to invest $30 billion in the US over the next five years, highlighting a commitment to bilateral cooperation.

This visit comes during a challenging period for Starmer, with ongoing political turmoil stemming from the UK ambassador’s connections to Epstein. Both leaders are likely to navigate this sensitive issue carefully, as Trump has previously faced scrutiny regarding his past associations with the disgraced financier.

Demonstrations against Trump have drawn mixed crowds outside Windsor Castle, with both supporters and opponents expressing their views. Among the supporters was Hazel Pearson, 66, from Londonderry, Northern Ireland, who wore a red Trump baseball cap and brought her daughter to experience the excitement. “Why miss an opportunity to see Trump and to feel the buzz?” she said.

Conversely, demonstrator Elliot Smith, 20, voiced his concerns about Trump’s trade policies and their implications for UK-US relations. “I think our countries have been great allies, but that doesn’t mean we have to get involved with every one of his issues,” he stated.

As Trump’s state visit unfolds, the blend of royal tradition and public dissent sets the stage for potentially significant diplomatic discussions and economic partnerships between the United States and the United Kingdom.
