Van Gerwen Aims to Defend Hungarian Darts Trophy This Weekend

Michael van Gerwen is set to defend his title at the Hungarian Darts Trophy this weekend, with the competition taking place from September 19 to 21, 2025, at the MVM Dome in Budapest. The tournament features a robust field of 48 players competing for a top prize of £30,000. Van Gerwen, returning to form after a victory at the World Series of Darts Finals, will face Andrew Gilding in his opening match.

The Dutch star, who has claimed 38 European Tour titles throughout his career, is looking to extend his record with another win in Hungary. His recent performances have reignited hopes among fans, especially after he ended a two-year wait for a PDC Premier event title last weekend.

Star-Studded Line-Up

In addition to Van Gerwen, the tournament features several notable competitors, including current World Champion Luke Littler, who may encounter Joe Cullen in a highly anticipated clash during the finals. Cullen, the 2022 Hungarian Darts Trophy champion, will begin his campaign against Germany’s Lukas Wenig.

Other significant matchups include Nathan Aspinall, a two-time European Tour winner in 2025, facing Host Nation Qualifier Levente Sarai, and the legendary Raymond van Barneveld, who will be up against Hungarian player Nandor Major. The first round promises to deliver thrilling darts action, with the likes of World No. 1 Luke Humphries potentially clashing with Aspinall in the later stages.

Exciting Matchups Ahead

The tournament will also see Gerwyn Price, the 2021 champion, competing against either Richard Veenstra or Cam Crabtree in his opener. Meanwhile, 2023 winner Dave Chisnall awaits the victor of the match between van Barneveld and Major.

Fans can look forward to watching Josh Rock, a recent European Tour finalist, as he vies against Ricardo Pietreczko or Jim Williams. Notably, Rob Cross, a two-time European Champion, will face Northern Ireland’s Daryl Gurney, who is seeking to advance after his match against Leon Weber.

The tournament will unfold over three days, with the first round taking place on Friday, September 19, starting at 13:00 local time for the afternoon session and 19:00 local time for the evening session. The excitement continues with the second round on Saturday and concludes on Sunday with the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final.

As the players gear up for the competition, the atmosphere is set for high-stakes darts, with fans eagerly anticipating a weekend of thrilling performances. The Hungarian Darts Trophy not only showcases elite talent but also serves as a gateway to the upcoming BoyleSports World Grand Prix, scheduled to take place from October 6 to 12, 2025, at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester.
