Sharks’ Hynes Shines in Semi-Final, Prepares for Melbourne Clash

UPDATE: In a stunning performance, Nicho Hynes propelled the Cronulla Sharks to a commanding 32-12 semi-final victory over the Canberra Raiders on July 15, 2023, securing a spot in the NRL preliminary final against the Melbourne Storm next Friday.

Hynes, often criticized for past playoff failures, flipped the script late in the first half by setting up Ronaldo Mulitalo for the Sharks’ first try, then scoring one himself. His stellar play has been crucial in leading the Sharks past the Sydney Roosters and Raiders, marking a significant turnaround as they hunt for their first grand final appearance since 2016.

Craig Fitzgibbon, head coach of the Sharks, emphasized Hynes’ pivotal role, stating, “He has got to get credit for that because he doesn’t get much.” Hynes, alongside Braydon Trindall, displayed exceptional chemistry on the field, driving the Sharks closer to their goal. “It’s just pleasing to see both of them play well together,” Fitzgibbon added.

The Sharks’ strong forward pack, led by Addin Fonua-Blake, provided Hynes with the support he needed to shine. Despite losing Tom Hazelton to a concussion early in the game, Fonua-Blake stepped up, playing over an hour and solidifying the Sharks’ dominance. “He’s an impressive man… stepping up right now,” Fitzgibbon praised.

Looking ahead to the clash against Melbourne, the Sharks enter the match with momentum, having won nine of their last ten games. Fitzgibbon noted, “The boys are hungry and they’re making the right choices and decisions.”

Hazelton will miss the upcoming match due to category one concussion symptoms, with Oregon Kaufusi expected to fill in. While the Sharks are seen as underdogs against the Storm, their recent performance has ignited hope among fans and players alike.

As anticipation builds for Friday’s showdown, the Sharks’ resilience and Hynes’ resurgence promise an electrifying match. Fans will be watching closely as Cronulla aims to turn their playoff fortunes around and secure a place in the grand final.
