Darley Devils Clinch Second Premiership in Thrilling Grand Final

UPDATE: The Darley Devils have just secured their second Ballarat Football League premiership in three years, dominating the Sunbury Lions with a final score of 11.13 (79)-6.9 (45) in a thrilling grand final held at City Oval on July 15, 2023. The Devils raced out of the gate with an explosive first quarter, establishing a commanding lead of 47-0 that left their opponents reeling.

The Devils showcased their prowess throughout the match, and despite a valiant effort from the Lions, it became clear early on that the trophy was headed to Darley. Coach Dan Jordan expressed immense pride in his team, stating, “I thought they had worked themselves into a position to be the best team all year.” His sentiments reflected the hard work and focus the team maintained leading up to this decisive match.

The first quarter set a decisive tone, with Darley capitalizing on favorable wind conditions. Jordan noted, “Arguably, the game is done at quarter time,” as the team executed their strategy flawlessly. The Lions struggled to respond, only managing a couple of goals in the second quarter while the Devils maintained the pressure.

As the game unfolded, the Devils demonstrated their maturity, controlling the pace and minimizing Sunbury’s opportunities. Key players Mace Cousins and Nick Hind each contributed two goals, with Hind also earning the AFL Victoria best on ground medal for his outstanding performance. The Lions fought hard in the second half, but the gap was insurmountable.

Jordan admitted to feeling nervous before the match, especially with Hind being his best friend and a crucial addition to the team following his AFL career. “He’s been unbelievable for our club and it’s good to see him get the rewards on grand final day,” Jordan said, highlighting Hind’s significant impact on both the senior team and the club’s junior and women’s programs.

In addition to the premiership, Brett Bewley was awarded the Roy Edward Memorial Trophy for his exceptional season. With this win, the Devils have now claimed their fourth premiership since 2015, further solidifying their legacy in the league.

Jordan emphasized the club’s commitment to sustained success, aiming to nurture young talent and build a lasting legacy. “To have all but Nick one-pointers, is testament to the club and how it’s developing,” he noted, hinting at a bright future for the Devils.

The celebration at Darley Park promises to be grand, as the Devils’ victory adds to the achievements of their A-grade and B-grade netball teams, both of which also won championships this weekend. The excitement in the air is palpable as the community comes together to celebrate this remarkable achievement.

Fans and supporters are already buzzing with anticipation for the festivities ahead, making this a moment that will resonate throughout the community for years to come. The Devils’ victory is not just a win; it’s a testament to their dedication, teamwork, and the unwavering support from their fans.
