BREAKING: Wodonga Raiders have secured their first-ever A-grade Ovens and Murray netball premiership, triumphing over Yarrawonga with a score of 49-40 at the Lavington Sports Ground. This emotional victory, achieved on July 15, 2023, marks a significant milestone for the Raiders after previously falling short in the finals for two consecutive years.
A standout performance by goal shooter Taylor Donelan, who scored 40 goals at an impressive 90 percent accuracy, earned her the prestigious Paula Cary Medal for best on court. The Raiders dedicated their win to Donelan’s late father, Trent Donelan, who passed away unexpectedly earlier this year.
In a passionate post-match speech, Raiders’ captain Mackensey House expressed gratitude to Trent, saying, “To our eighth player in the sky, thank you so much. Tay, I’m so proud of you. This has been the toughest year for our group.”
Donelan reflected on the significance of the victory, stating, “Dad, this was for you. I’m overwhelmed, it means so much.” The team’s emotional journey has brought them closer together, and this premiership is a testament to their resilience.
The game began with both teams evenly matched, finishing the first quarter tied at 11-11. By halftime, the Raiders took a four-goal lead, 24-20, and maintained momentum despite a heartbreaking injury to Yarrawonga’s midcourter, Tilly Kennedy, who had to be assisted off the court.
As the match progressed, the Raiders extended their lead to 39-28 by three-quarter time, ultimately holding off a late push from the Pigeons to secure the championship. Coach Jodie House revealed her pride in the team’s achievement, saying, “The fact that we have done it today is unbelievable.”
The victory is even more poignant for the House family, with Jodie coaching alongside her daughters, Shaylah, Mackensey, and Blaynee, who all played pivotal roles in the match. Their father, John, was part of the Raiders’ only senior football premiership in 1998, making this victory a family legacy.
In addition to the A-grade triumph, the Raiders also celebrated a successful day in the junior divisions, clinching the 15-under flag against Myrtleford with a score of 54-42. Emerson O’Neill was named best on court for the 15-under match, capping off an undefeated season for the young Raiders.
As netball fans celebrate this historic win, the Raiders’ journey underscores the emotional and community bonds that sports can foster, shining a light on their resilience in the face of adversity. This victory is not only a triumph on the court but a touching tribute to the enduring memory of a beloved family member.
