Celebrated Author Pamela Allen Inspires Generations at 91

Pamela Allen, a renowned children’s author, celebrated her illustrious career at the State Library of New South Wales with the launch of her exhibition, *The Curious World of Pamela Allen*. At 91 years old, Allen continues to inspire young readers with her imaginative storytelling and vibrant illustrations.

The exhibition showcases the breadth of Allen’s work, including all 55 books she has both written and illustrated, along with eight others she has illustrated. The library acquired her archives in 2020, and this ongoing celebration of her contributions to children’s literature is free to the public.

During the launch event, Allen read from her latest book, *COCK-a-DOODLE DOO!*, her 63rd publication. The atmosphere was lively as children dressed as characters from her stories led attendees through the exhibition, reminiscent of a modern-day Pied Piper. Allen expressed her joy in sharing her stories, stating, “My books are made to be shared; it’s the voice that brings them to life.”

Many attendees, including parents like one who described her experience reading Allen’s *Grandpa and Thomas* to her twin sons, reflected on the emotional connections formed through her work. The phrase “Swish swash swoosh, sings the waves” became a cherished chant during their readings, illustrating the impact Allen’s storytelling has had on families across generations.

The exhibition not only highlights Allen’s literary accomplishments but also offers insights into her creative process. As she noted during her speech, her books transcend mere text; they become immersive experiences for both children and adults. “They were more than words. They became an experience,” she reflected, capturing the essence of her storytelling.

With her works deeply woven into the fabric of many childhoods, Allen’s influence is undeniable. Her dedication to engaging young imaginations has established her as a beloved figure in children’s literature, both in Australia and around the world.

The exhibition at the State Library of New South Wales is ongoing and serves as a testament to Allen’s enduring legacy, inviting new generations to discover the joy and wonder of her stories.
