Teens Charged After Dramatic Police Chase and Gunfire Incident

UPDATE: A teenage boy and girl have been charged following a dramatic late-night police pursuit in Sydney that involved gunfire and injuries to an officer. The incident unfolded around 9:15 PM on Saturday when NSW Police attempted to pull over a suspected stolen Citroen sedan in Blacktown.

When the vehicle failed to stop, police initiated a chase that spanned several suburbs before culminating in Leichhardt, where the car crashed into two parked vehicles and rammed three police cars. In a chaotic turn of events, the car drove directly towards officers, leading to a tense standoff. During this encounter, the vehicle reversed into a 27-year-old officer, causing him to sustain a concussion. He was subsequently hospitalized but has since been released.

Acting Superintendent Adam Solah confirmed that during the confrontation, one officer discharged their firearm while another used a taser, yet the driver managed to escape the scene. The abandoned vehicle was later discovered in a driveway in Petersham.

“We’re very lucky that no one was killed, including police,” Acting Supt Solah stated during a press briefing on Sunday.

Later, around 2 PM on Sunday, authorities arrested a 17-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl at a residence in Erskineville. The boy faces 10 charges, including police pursuit, assaulting a police officer, and five counts of property damage. The girl has been charged with being carried in a conveyance taken without the owner’s consent and breaching bail conditions. Both teens have been denied bail and are set to appear in a Children’s Court on Monday.

This incident highlights the escalating tensions and risks associated with car theft and police pursuits in urban areas. As authorities continue to investigate, the community is left to ponder the implications of youth involvement in such dangerous activities.

In a separate but notable incident, police arrested a 36-year-old man following a pursuit in Sydney’s northwest on Friday. He faces serious charges, including possession of a firearm without a permit and drug-related offenses, and is expected to appear before Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.
