Urgent: Copper Thieves Force Closure of Five Public Toilets

UPDATE: Copper thieves struck overnight on September 16, forcing the Macedon Ranges Council to close five public toilets due to extensive damage. The affected locations include Sankey Reserve in Gisborne, Ross Watt Reserve in New Gisborne, Campaspe Park in Woodend, Kyneton Botanic Gardens, and Stanley Park in Macedon.

The theft of copper pipes has resulted in a significant disruption to local services, with the mains water supply cut off at these essential facilities. Dom Testoni, the council’s Director of Assets and Operations, expressed disappointment over the incidents, stating that all thefts have been reported to the police. He emphasized the negative impact on community infrastructure, noting that such criminal acts lead to “unnecessary costs to council” and hinder public services.

“Copper theft causes significant damage to community infrastructure,” Mr. Testoni stated. He revealed that repairs could potentially run into the thousands of dollars. Fortunately, the council aims to have the toilets operational again within days.

In response to these alarming thefts, the council is already implementing security measures, including improved lighting and monitoring systems. Mr. Testoni assured residents that the council will continue to explore additional strategies to safeguard public amenities.

Authorities are calling on the community for assistance. If you have any information regarding the copper thefts, contact the Police Assistance Line at 131 444 or Crime Stoppers Victoria at 1800 333 000. You can also report tips online at crimestoppersvic.com.au.

The urgency of this situation highlights the pressing need for community vigilance. As the investigation unfolds, residents are encouraged to stay alert and report any suspicious activity to help protect public resources.
