Police Raid Reveals $500K Cannabis Operation in Melbourne

UPDATE: Police have uncovered a staggering $500,000 worth of cannabis hidden inside shipping containers during a series of raids across Melbourne and the regional town of Echuca. This operation, which unfolded on September 19, 2024, has led to the arrest of three alleged drug traffickers connected to an organized crime syndicate.

Detectives launched the investigation in November 2023, focusing on the syndicate’s ability to distribute significant quantities of illicit drugs. With raids taking place in both suburban warehouses and private residences, authorities are sending a clear message: they are committed to dismantling drug trafficking operations in Victoria.

During the extensive searches, police seized not only the cannabis but also over $200,000 in cash, small quantities of cocaine, weapons, and encrypted devices. They recovered 86 mature cannabis plants and approximately 25 kilograms of dried cannabis, with further forensic testing pending to determine the exact weight and composition.

The three individuals arrested include a 35-year-old man from Keilor Park, a 28-year-old from Albion, and a 54-year-old from Echuca. Each has been charged with serious offenses, including cultivating a narcotic plant and trafficking drugs of dependence. Their cases remain active in the court system.

Acting Commander Raymond Imbriano of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) expressed gratitude towards the investigative teams involved. He stated, “We are committed to reducing the threat posed by organized crime to the lives, welfare, and hip pockets of Australians.” This operation highlights the AFP’s unwavering dedication to making Victoria a challenging environment for those seeking to profit from illicit drugs.

As the investigation continues, authorities anticipate further arrests, reinforcing the urgent need for community vigilance against drug-related crime. The fallout from this operation could have significant implications for Melbourne’s drug trafficking landscape.

Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity to help law enforcement combat the ongoing challenges posed by organized crime. Stay tuned for more updates as this developing story unfolds.
