Victoria Launches $976M Road Maintenance Blitz Starting Now

UPDATE: The Victorian government has just announced a sweeping $976 million road maintenance blitz designed to rebuild and repair crucial roadways across the state. Launched by Roads and Road Safety Minister Melissa Horne in Kyneton, this initiative aims to enhance the roads that Victorians rely on daily, focusing on major travel and trade routes.

This urgent undertaking is set to roll out immediately, with crews mobilizing to tackle hundreds of major maintenance projects over the next nine months. The blitz will predominantly focus on regional roads, allocating 70 percent of the funding to improve connectivity in less urbanized areas.

“We’re investing nearly a billion dollars to rebuild and repair the roads that Victorians depend on every single day,” Horne stated during the launch. The initiative includes road rehabilitation, resurfacing, pothole patching, and maintenance of critical infrastructure like bridges and traffic lights, ensuring safer and smoother travel for all.

Key routes targeted by the blitz include the Western Highway, Princes Highway East, Princes Highway West, Hume Highway, and the Calder Highway. In metropolitan areas, upgrades will also be made to the Mornington Peninsula Freeway, Leakes Road, Normanby Road, Warburton Highway, and Boronia Road.

In addition to road improvements, crews will be actively mowing, slashing, and spraying tens of thousands of kilometers of roadsides. Inspecting and repairing thousands of bridges and fixing hundreds of traffic lights and electronic signs are also part of the comprehensive strategy. The government has prioritized these projects based on expert assessments and valuable community feedback, ensuring that the most pressing needs are addressed first.

The blitz is expected to continue until mid-2026, with thousands of projects set to enhance the state’s road network. This significant investment not only aims to improve infrastructure but also supports local economies by facilitating better access and connectivity.

Stay tuned for ongoing updates as this major road maintenance initiative unfolds, impacting daily travel for countless Victorians. For more information, visit transport.vic.gov.au.
