The Central Coast region of Australia is set to benefit significantly from a funding initiative that will inject a total of $5.88 million into local projects aimed at enhancing economic growth and job creation. The investment includes $3.17 million allocated by the Minns Labor Government, sourced from the Government’s Regional Development Trust. This funding is part of a broader strategy to stimulate regional development and support initiatives that address specific community needs.
Economic Development and Infrastructure Enhancements
The financial support will facilitate two key projects: the establishment of a purpose-built training facility at the Central Coast Food Manufacturing Precinct and Innovation Hub in Ourimbah, and enhancements to the visitor experience at the renowned Australian Reptile Park in Somersby. These projects are designed to not only improve local infrastructure but also to create a more vibrant economy through increased employment opportunities.
Minister for Regional NSW, Tara Moriarty, emphasized the importance of this funding, stating, “This funding backs regional communities with projects that create jobs, boost local businesses and improve services.” The upgrades at the Australian Reptile Park are expected to attract more visitors, both domestic and international, ensuring that this iconic attraction remains a key destination for tourists in the region.
The new training facility in Ourimbah aims to strengthen the local food manufacturing sector. “The Central Coast is a powerhouse for food manufacturing,” Moriarty noted, adding that the facility will help bridge skills gaps and explore the integration of new technologies to enhance productivity.
Community and Economic Impact
Local representatives have also voiced their support for the funding initiative. David Harris, the Minister for the Central Coast, highlighted the significance of the Newcastle Port Community Contributions Fund, which provides substantial grants for local organisations. He encouraged eligible groups to apply, aiming to further bolster the region’s economic future.
State Member for Gosford, Liesl Tesch, expressed her enthusiasm for the Australian Reptile Park, stating, “We know that visitors to the Reptile Park often go on to stay in our region, boosting our local economy.” Tesch underscored the park’s vital role in conservation and research, praising the government’s support for its ongoing efforts.
The funding will not only enhance the visitor experience at the park but is also expected to create additional jobs, contributing to the growth of the local tourism sector. David Mehan, State Member for The Entrance, remarked, “This funding boost is a welcome investment, which will not only create more local jobs but continue to drive economic growth to our region.”
Industry Support and Future Developments
The Managing Director of the Australian Reptile Park, Tim Faulkner, expressed pride in receiving the funding, referring to the park’s recognition as Australia’s Best Large Tourist Attraction. He stated, “This grant represents another exciting step in our expansion,” indicating that the funds will further develop the park’s entry precinct to enhance the visitor experience.
Additionally, Frank Sammut, Executive Director of Central Coast Industry Connect, noted that the investment in training will lead to a more skilled workforce, enabling businesses to improve quality and safety while adopting advanced technologies. Project Manager Alex Blow described the initiative as a transformative opportunity for the region, stating, “This project will give people the skills, confidence, and industry connections they need.”
The investments made through the Regional Development Trust are assessed by the Regional Development Advisory Council, an independent entity tasked with ensuring that regional community interests remain a priority in government decision-making. Further announcements regarding additional funding allocations from the Regional Development Trust are anticipated in the coming months.
