URGENT UPDATE: A school of sharks has been spotted circling the Swan River near the Fremantle Traffic Bridge, the same location where 16-year-old Stella Berry tragically lost her life in a shark attack in 2023. Recent reports confirm the presence of these sharks, which are believed to be between 1.5 and 2 meters in length, raising alarm among local fishers and authorities.
The sightings, tracked by the SharkSmart website, occurred less than 24 hours apart starting Monday. Eyewitness video taken by construction workers reveals a school of baby sharks in the water directly adjacent to Fremantle Port. This alarming development has reignited concerns over shark activity in the area.
Stella Berry was attacked while swimming with dolphins after jumping off a jet ski near the bridge. The shark involved was later identified as a bull shark by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. Now, with the recent sightings, local fishers are debating whether the sharks are indeed bull sharks or possibly bronze whalers.
Commercial fisher Glen Foxton expressed skepticism, stating, “It’s hard to tell from that video, but I think they’re bronzies. I’ve never seen bull sharks school up like that.” Foxton noted that he has frequently observed bronze whalers throughout the river, particularly in the Como area and near Canning Bridge.
Public safety remains a top priority as authorities monitor the situation closely. With the potential risks posed by these sharks, locals are urged to remain vigilant when engaging in water activities near the bridge.
As of now, officials are advising swimmers and watercraft operators to exercise caution in the area. The situation is developing, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
Stay tuned for the latest developments on this urgent matter.
