UPDATE: A historic celebration took place on September 20, 2025, as the Lowan Lodge 107 commemorated 140 years of Freemasonry in Nhill with a vibrant community event. The lodge reenacted the consecration of the cornerstone of the Nhill Post Office, a pivotal moment first marked on October 29, 1887.
The event kicked off with a ceremonial march to the post office, attended by local Freemasons and community members. As the crowd gathered, they sang God Save the King, setting a tone of unity and celebration. During the ceremony, WBro Wiremu Larkins, Worshipful Master of the lodge, received and verified the original plans for the post office building.
Following this, Larkins, along with WBro Graeme Price and VWBro Bill Howarth, inspected the cornerstone, placing a plumb rule, a level, and a square in position. In a symbolic gesture, Larkins poured wine, oil, and sprinkled grain over the stone, followed by three taps from a gavel, marking it as “well and truly laid.” The crowd erupted into cheers and sang Rule Britannia to celebrate this significant milestone.
WBro Rhys Webb provided attendees with a detailed history of the Nhill Post Office and the lodge’s contributions to the community over the years. The ceremony concluded with the Australian national anthem, further instilling a sense of pride among those present.
In a fitting tribute, a tree was planted by WBro Larkins and VWBro Haby in front of the post office, accompanied by the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the occasion.
The celebration continued with a dinner at the Farmers Arms, where traditional toasts were made. Representing the Grand Master, RWBro John McTaggart congratulated the lodge members on this significant achievement.
Attendees included representatives from numerous local organizations, including the Nhill CWA, Nhill SES, Hindmarsh Shire Council, Nhill Lions Club, and Nhill Rotary Club. Their presence underscored the strong community bonds fostered through Freemasonry in the region.
This momentous occasion highlights the enduring legacy of Freemasonry in Nhill, showcasing the organization’s commitment to supporting one another and the broader community. The event not only celebrated a rich history but also marked a reaffirmation of the lodge’s dedication to service and fellowship.
