Microsoft Ends Support for Windows 10: What You Need to Know

As of October 14, 2025, Microsoft will officially cease support for Windows 10, meaning users will no longer receive feature or security updates. This impending deadline urges PC users to assess their options and the potential risks associated with remaining on the outdated operating system. With just weeks left until the final security update, it is crucial for users to understand their choices thoroughly.

Assess Your Upgrade Options

Before considering any alternatives, users must first determine whether their systems are eligible for an upgrade to Windows 11. Many may be deterred by the idea of switching, but it is worth investigating if your PC can meet the necessary requirements.

The PC Health Check app or Windows Update may indicate that your device does not support Windows 11 due to a lack of TPM 2.0. In some instances, this feature may simply be disabled in the BIOS settings. If this is the case, enabling TPM 2.0 could allow for a seamless upgrade prior to the end of support for Windows 10.

Free Extended Security Updates

In a recent policy change, Microsoft has made provisions for an additional year of free support for Windows 10 users, particularly those located in the European Economic Area (EEA). Users in this region can easily enroll for Extended Security Updates via Windows Update. By clicking on the ‘Enroll now’ button beneath the check for updates option, they can secure this extended support without additional requirements, provided they have a Microsoft Account.

For users outside Europe, the process is slightly different. They will need to sync their PC settings with Microsoft’s OneDrive to qualify for an additional year of updates. This entails using the Windows Backup app to align settings with the cloud service, allowing them to also access the Extended Security Updates.

Alternatively, users who prefer not to sync their settings can opt to pay for the extra year of support. The fee is set at $30 or can be covered using 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, should they have sufficient points.

The Risks of Remaining on Windows 10

For those contemplating the option of staying on Windows 10 without updates, it is advisable to reconsider. Operating without the monthly security updates exposes users to significant vulnerabilities. Over time, new security flaws will emerge, and without prompt updates, these gaps could be exploited by malicious actors.

While it may seem manageable to operate without updates for a brief period, the long-term implications could be detrimental. As security holes remain unpatched, the likelihood of falling victim to cyber threats increases. The risk of malware infiltrating an unsupported system poses a far greater threat than the inconvenience of syncing settings with Microsoft.

In conclusion, as the deadline approaches, users must take proactive steps to secure their systems. Whether opting for an upgrade, enrolling for extended updates, or considering a paid option, the importance of staying protected cannot be overstated. Delaying action may lead to severe security risks that could compromise personal and sensitive data, making it imperative to make informed decisions before support for Windows 10 officially ends.
