Tammy Kanat Unveils Ambitious Exhibition at Jewish Museum NOW

BREAKING: Australian fibre artist Tammy Kanat has just unveiled her most ambitious exhibition yet, titled Circle of Her, at the Jewish Museum of Australia. This major solo exhibition, running until March 22, 2026, is a part of the esteemed Eva and Marc Besen Contemporary Artist Commission, showcasing a stunning evolution in Kanat’s artistic journey.

Kanat’s latest works push the boundaries of her renowned vibrant woven wall pieces, delving into immersive sculptural forms that are both evocative and transformative. The exhibition invites audiences to explore themes of feminine renewal, cultural belonging, and the storytelling power of materials.

In a powerful reflective moment, Kanat shares, “As I began working, I found myself listening differently, not to the materials, but to something internal, and somehow older than me. These pieces are vessels for presence, intuition and transformation.” This insight underscores the exhibition’s emotional depth and its connection to ancestral memory and female archetypes.

The intimate setting of the Jewish Museum of Australia enhances the experience, allowing visitors to engage in a richly layered meditation on identity and connection. The exhibition features seven bold sculptural forms, each paying tribute to archetypal feminine figures—matriarchs, muses, and ancestral spirits—while also honoring the women in Kanat’s life, including her mother, daughters, sister, and fellow artists.

Curated by Esther Gyorki, Circle of Her is not just an exhibition but also includes a significant publication authored by Dr. Paola Di Trocchio, former curator at the National Gallery of Victoria. This publication features insights from notable voices in design and cultural discourse, further situating Kanat’s work within both contemporary Australian and global contexts.

“Tammy’s new work is materially rich, spiritually resonant and deeply personal,” states Gyorki. “It honors the threads we inherit and those we pass on, evoking the spiral as a symbol of continuity, introspection, and transformation.”

Kanat’s profile has surged in recent years, especially after her participation in the inaugural Mecca x NGV Women in Design Commission in 2019. The Circle of Her exhibition promises to extend her influence, offering an interactive experience that encourages audiences to connect with their own inner voices and shared cultural lineages.

To enhance the atmosphere, the exhibition also features a new soundscape composed by Kanat’s brother, Grant Blashki, in collaboration with Gidi Ifergan, along with a dynamic public program that includes artist talks, guided meditations, weaving workshops, and music events.
