New Skatepark Opens in Merimbula, Reviving Local Skate Culture

Residents of Merimbula welcomed the arrival of a new skatepark at Ford Park in mid-September 2023, providing a dedicated space for skating enthusiasts in the region. The park’s opening has sparked excitement among local skaters, who view it as a significant addition to the Far South Coast’s skate culture.

Leuca McDonald, an 18-year-old skater, was among the first to experience the park’s features shortly after its opening. “I think it’s sick,” he expressed, highlighting his satisfaction after successfully landing an ollie with impressive hang time. McDonald emphasized the importance of having a vibrant skate culture, stating, “I’m definitely enjoying it, and the skatepark is well built, smooth, well-rounded, and all the stuff I like.”

Nearby, Jordan Sleep, a 25-year-old from Lochiel, took a moment to relax at a picnic table. Reflecting on the past, he noted, “I am so glad it’s here. I wish there had been something like this 10 years ago. It would have given us more freedom than trying to skate street spots in town.” Sleep recounted the challenges of skating in public spaces, where skaters often faced obstacles while searching for suitable locations.

The new skatepark not only offers a well-structured environment for skaters but also serves as a community hub. Sleep remarked, “It brings the community together. I haven’t been able to socialise with other skaters for a while.” He praised the quality of the park, which he believes will attract numerous visitors. “You’ll see a lot of people come through here now, which is good,” he noted.

Jordan Sleep reminisced about his experiences as a young skater, acknowledging the lack of facilities available a decade ago. “If you’re a 10-year-old that’s trying to start out, you couldn’t do it here 10 years ago, so I’m overjoyed to see people starting when they’re so young.” His enthusiasm underscores the positive impact of the new park, which he believes contributes to the growth of the local skate scene.

The opening of the skatepark not only provides an outlet for young skaters but also strengthens the bonds within the community. Sleep concluded with a sense of optimism, stating, “It brings joy to the heart to see that skating isn’t dying just yet.” The addition of the Merimbula skatepark complements existing facilities in Eden and Pambula, signaling a revitalization of the region’s skate culture and fostering a new generation of skaters.
