Griffith City Council Endorses New Master Plan for Ted Scobie Oval

UPDATE: The Griffith City Council has just endorsed an ambitious new master plan for Ted Scobie Oval, signaling a significant upgrade for the popular sporting venue. This decision was confirmed during an ordinary council meeting on September 23, which sets the stage for a series of enhancements aimed at modernizing the facility.

The master plan is the result of a collaborative effort between local sports associations, including the Griffith Touch Association, Griffith District Cricket Association, and Griffith and District Football Association. Key upgrades will feature a brand-new two-storey clubhouse, improved lighting around the perimeter pathway, and additional amenities like water taps and power points for large-scale events.

“This master plan supports its growth and future use,” stated Mayor Doug Curran, emphasizing the importance of Ted Scobie Oval in the city’s sporting landscape. The council’s endorsement follows a public exhibition period of 28 days, during which numerous community submissions were received.

While some community members expressed concerns regarding potential impacts on the arts community, Mayor Curran clarified that the council has no financial stake in the upgrades. “We aren’t spending money up there; we are endorsing the master plan with a couple of additional items,” he stated during the meeting.

Councillor Mark Dal Bon praised the local sports organizations for their initiative, expressing surprise that they are not seeking funds from the council. “I think it’s great that people are willing to go out, get their own grants,” he noted, highlighting the proactive approach taken by these groups.

The upgrades are being driven by increasing demand for modern facilities to better accommodate local athletes and sporting events. Among the proposed features is a new grass volleyball court and enhanced fencing around the multi-purpose courts, aimed at improving safety and accessibility for users.

As the council moves forward, the timing and progression of each upgrade will depend on identified demand and funding opportunities. The focus remains on ensuring Ted Scobie Oval continues to support the sporting community effectively.

Stay tuned for further updates as this project develops, and watch for how these enhancements will impact local sports and community events in the coming months.
