India and China to Resume Flights After 5-Year Halt

BREAKING: Direct flights between India and China are set to resume on October 26, ending a five-year suspension that has strained bilateral relations. This announcement was confirmed by Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and marks a significant step towards easing tensions between the two countries, which have not had direct flights since the onset of the pandemic in 2020.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs made the announcement earlier today, followed closely by IndiGo, India’s largest airline, which revealed it will launch daily non-stop flights between Kolkata and Guangzhou. This move comes as both nations grapple with their massive trade relationship, where China is India’s biggest bilateral trade partner despite ongoing diplomatic challenges.

In a statement released last night, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport expressed its support for the resumed flights, emphasizing a commitment to further promote direct routes, including connections to Delhi. “In the future, Guangzhou Baiyun Airport will also actively promote airlines to open direct routes such as Guangzhou and Delhi,” the statement noted.

The backdrop to this development includes a recent meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who discussed their nations as partners in development rather than rivals. This dialogue occurred just one month ago during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, where Modi highlighted the importance of addressing India’s growing trade deficit with China, currently estimated at nearly $99.2 billion.

The resumption of flights is not just a logistical development; it carries emotional significance for many families and businesses affected by the travel ban. The prolonged halt of direct flights has left many unable to reunite with loved ones or conduct essential business. The reopening of this air route is expected to rejuvenate connections and foster deeper ties between the two populous nations.

As both governments navigate the complexities of their relationship, the resumption of flights is being closely monitored by international observers. It signals a cautious willingness to mend fences and underscores the necessity for ongoing dialogue amid economic pressures and territorial disputes.

WHAT’S NEXT: Travelers and businesses are gearing up for the resumption, with expectations for increased flight availability and potential expansions in air travel services. The situation remains fluid, and stakeholders are advised to keep an eye on further announcements from both governments regarding travel guidelines and safety measures.

As this story develops, stay tuned for updates on how this resumption may influence trade, travel, and diplomatic relations between India and China.
