Trump Issues Ultimatum to Hamas Over Peace Deal for Gaza

Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Hamas, threatening severe consequences if the militant group does not accept his proposed peace plan for Gaza by a deadline of 6pm on October 29, 2023, Washington time, which corresponds to 9am on October 30, 2023, AEST. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that failure to reach an agreement would unleash “all hell” on Hamas.

In his message, Trump described the peace deal as a “LAST CHANCE” for Hamas, emphasizing that if the group does not comply, it will face unprecedented retaliation. He urged “innocent Palestinians” to evacuate to safer areas as he prepares for potential military action against the remaining forces of Hamas. His post warned that most of Hamas’s fighters are “surrounded and MILITARILY TRAPPED,” adding that they are awaiting his command for an assault.

Trump’s 20-Point Peace Plan

The peace initiative, which Trump unveiled earlier this week, has received the endorsement of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It proposes a series of steps aimed at achieving stability in the region, including an immediate ceasefire, a swap of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinians detained by Israel, a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the establishment of a transitional government administered by an international body.

A critical component of Trump’s plan is the demand for Hamas to disarm, a stipulation the group has previously rejected. Sources within Hamas have indicated that they are currently reviewing the proposal, which follows almost two years of intense conflict in Gaza. A recent United Nations-backed inquiry has characterized the ongoing violence in the region as a genocide.

The Israeli military continues its offensive in Gaza City, which has led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of residents. According to health ministry figures from the Hamas-run territory, at least 66,148 Palestinians have been killed since the onset of the conflict. The UN has flagged that this data does not differentiate between civilians and combatants, but reports indicate that over half of the deceased are women and children.

Humanitarian Concerns Amid Conflict

The UN reiterated last week that there are no safe zones in Gaza, stressing that areas designated by Israel as safe havens are “places of death.” As the situation escalates, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen, prompting calls for urgent international intervention.

Trump’s ultimatum highlights the precarious nature of peace efforts in the region, with the potential for further escalation looming. The international community watches closely as events unfold, hoping for a resolution that can bring an end to the violence and suffering endured by the people of Gaza.
