URGENT UPDATE: The future of a proposed $15 million greyhound track in Orange hangs in the balance as the Greyhound Breeders Owners & Trainers Association (GBOTA) seeks a crucial extension. With a looming deadline of October 25, 2024, the GBOTA has confirmed it cannot submit the required development application (DA) on time, risking the deal to purchase the land from Orange City Council.
In a significant development earlier today, GBOTA CEO Dan Weizman announced that multiple documents still need finalization, prompting a request for an additional 12 months beyond the original 18-month timeframe. This extension request stems from recent changes to bushfire regulations that could drastically impact the project’s viability.
According to a letter from the law firm Pryor Tzannes and Wallis, the land intended for the greyhound track is now classified as bushfire prone. This classification necessitates the establishment of an asset protection zone (APZ), which must be a buffer between potential bushfire hazards and the club building. The required 36-meter APZ cannot fit completely within the site boundaries, complicating the project further.
“We know the local community is eager to see this project realized, and the GBOTA shares in that enthusiasm,” the letter stated. Despite the community’s divided opinion—55% against, 45% in favor—GBOTA remains committed to creating a “Centre of Excellence for Greyhound Racing in NSW.”
As of now, the October 7 council meeting will be crucial for deciding whether to grant the extension. Council staff have recommended approval, but Scott Maunder, council director, noted there is still a “significant amount of work” left to comply with regulations, which could take nearly a year to complete.
This developing situation has raised concerns among local residents and stakeholders who are anxious about the future of the greyhound track. The council’s decision will determine not only the fate of the project but also the economic impact it could have on the Orange community.
With key meetings on the horizon and critical decisions to be made, all eyes will be on Orange as the GBOTA strives to navigate this complex regulatory landscape. Stay tuned for updates as this story unfolds.
