NBA Confirms All-Star Game Will Remain in Los Angeles Despite Probe

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced on Monday that the upcoming All-Star Game will remain in Los Angeles, despite an ongoing investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers regarding potential violations of salary cap regulations related to star player Kawhi Leonard. Silver clarified that there is “no contemplation” of relocating the event from the Clippers’ home arena, the Intuit Dome.

The investigation was launched last month following a report by journalist Pablo Torre, which highlighted a significant endorsement deal valued at $28 million between Leonard and Aspiration Fund Adviser LLC, a sustainability services firm based in California that recently filed for bankruptcy. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has a vested interest in Aspiration, having made a $50 million investment in the company. The partnership between the Clippers and Aspiration was formally announced in September 2021, with a total value of $300 million.

The NBA has the authority to impose severe penalties if it finds that the Clippers violated cap rules. Potential consequences could include a fine of up to $7.5 million, the voiding of contracts, and the forfeiture of future draft picks. Despite these serious implications, Silver assured fans that the festivities associated with the All-Star Game will proceed as planned.

“There’s no contemplation of moving the All-Star Game,” Silver stated during a press conference at NBC Sports headquarters. He emphasized that the preparations for the All-Star Game and its related events are “operating completely independently” of the investigation.

The All-Star Game is scheduled for February 15, 2024, and will feature a new format that pits a U.S. team against an international squad. This event will be broadcast live by NBC, marking the network’s return to airing NBA games this season.

Looking ahead, the NBA had previously announced that the 2026 All-Star Weekend will be hosted at the Intuit Dome, even before its official opening for the 2024-25 season. The arena is also slated to host basketball events during the 2028 Olympics, further solidifying its role as a central venue for major sporting events in Los Angeles.

As the league navigates the investigation, the focus remains on delivering a successful All-Star Game, with anticipation building among players and fans alike.
