Sean Dyche Rules Out Rangers Coaching Position After Martin’s Sacking

Sean Dyche has confirmed he is not interested in the position of head coach at Rangers following the recent dismissal of Russell Martin. The 54-year-old manager, who is currently without a club, previously worked with Rangers’ sporting director, Kevin Thelwell, during his tenure at Everton.

Rangers are actively seeking a successor after Martin was sacked on October 1, 2023, following a disappointing start to the season. Under Martin’s leadership, the team secured only one victory in their first seven league matches, which tied the club’s record for the worst start to a season. This poor performance ultimately led to his departure after a 1-1 draw against Falkirk, where police had to escort him from the stadium due to unrest among supporters.

The club’s management is currently evaluating a list of potential candidates to take over, but no standout option has emerged as of yet. Among the names being discussed, many supporters hope for a return of former manager Steven Gerrard, although the feasibility of such a move remains uncertain.

In addition to domestic struggles, Martin’s reign saw Rangers exit the Champions League after suffering a heavy aggregate defeat of 9-1 to Club Brugge. The team then dropped into the Europa League, where they faced further challenges, losing their opening matches against Genk and Sturm Graz.

Despite progressing to the League Cup semi-finals, Martin’s overall record at Rangers was disappointing. He won only five of his 17 matches, marking him as the worst-ranked permanent manager in the club’s history. His tenure lasted just a few months, making him the shortest-serving manager in Rangers’ history, and he became the fourth manager sacked in the last three years.

Looking ahead, Rangers will face Dundee United at home after the international break on October 18. The club remains committed to finding a new leader who can turn their fortunes around and restore the team’s competitive edge in Scottish football.
