Hamas Submits Hostage List as Urgent Gaza Talks Intensify

UPDATE: Talks to end the war in Gaza are intensifying following Hamas’s submission of its list of hostages and Palestinian prisoners for a potential swap. This critical development arrives as senior delegations from Israel and the US prepare to join negotiations at an Egyptian Red Sea resort, which began on Monday.

According to reports, US President Donald Trump is taking a proactive role in the peace process, sending his son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff to the talks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also dispatched his strategic affairs minister, Ron Dermer, to the discussions. Notably, the Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, is expected to participate on Wednesday.

This latest push for peace comes amidst a backdrop of significant violence, with Gaza authorities reporting over 67,000 deaths since the conflict escalated following a deadly attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 individuals and the abduction of 251 hostages.

Hamas’s list of potential prisoners for exchange includes high-profile figures such as Marwan al-Barghouti, a leader of the Fatah movement, and Ahmed Saadat, head of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Both are serving multiple life sentences for attacks that killed Israelis. This exchange could mark a significant turning point in the ongoing conflict.

The negotiations are reportedly focused on three core issues: halting the hostilities, withdrawing Israeli forces from Gaza, and finalizing the swap deal. However, Hamas has yet to address one of the main sticking points: Israel’s demand for the group to disarm. A Palestinian source indicated that Hamas is unwilling to discuss disarmament as long as Israeli troops occupy Palestinian territories.

In a concerning development, Israeli military actions continue, albeit at a reduced intensity, in response to Trump’s request. Despite this, airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of eight individuals in the last 24 hours, marking one of the lowest tolls in recent weeks. Local resident Jehad al-Shagnobi expressed the community’s urgent need for a ceasefire, stating, “We hope from God that a ceasefire would take place as soon as possible, because people can’t bear the suffering anymore.”

Trump’s peace plan, which is gaining international support, proposes the establishment of an international governing body led by Trump himself, along with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, to oversee Gaza’s post-war administration. Arab nations backing the plan emphasize that it must lead to a future Palestinian state, a prospect Netanyahu has consistently ruled out.

Should a breakthrough occur, questions remain about who will govern Gaza post-conflict. Netanyahu, Trump, and both Western and Arab allies have dismissed any role for Hamas in future governance. Hamas, however, has indicated a willingness to cede control to a Palestinian technocrat government under the supervision of the Palestinian Authority, adhering to a longstanding Egyptian proposal, but firmly rejects any foreign oversight.

As public outcry against Israel’s military actions grows, rights experts and a UN inquiry have described the situation as approaching genocide. In stark contrast, Israel maintains that its operations are acts of self-defense following the initial Hamas assault.

As this situation develops, the world watches closely to see if these talks will finally yield a path to peace in Gaza. Stay tuned for further updates as negotiations progress.
