UPDATE: The Leitchville-Gunbower Bombers have just announced the appointment of Joel Donehue as their new senior coach for the 2026 season. This significant move comes as the Bombers aim to build on their recent successes in the Heathcote District League.
Donehue, who has a rich history with the Bombers, steps up from his role as an assistant and development coach. He previously guided the under-17 team to premiership victories in 2017 and 2018, showcasing his coaching prowess. His brief experience as a senior coach in 2019, where he led the team in two matches after the departure of former coach Danny Teskera, adds to his qualifications.
“I’m excited to be doing it, particularly having coached a chunk of the boys in 2017 and 2018,” Donehue stated. “It was a really good group of kids, and hopefully, we might be able to get a few more of them back.” His enthusiasm reflects a commitment to reconnecting with players he previously coached.
As the Bombers prepare for the new season, they are looking to retain their nearly complete roster, with 90 percent of the existing players re-committed. However, the team will face challenges, including the retirement of experienced forward Chris Horman and the overseas move of assistant coach Sam Keogh.
Donehue is actively pursuing new talent to bolster the squad, mentioning that the club has “a few on the hook” and is eyeing players with previous ties to the Bombers. “We’re trying to chase quality players in their prime who can help what is a fairly young side,” he said. His focus on player retention and recruitment speaks volumes about the Bombers’ aspirations for the upcoming season.
In a statement, the Bombers highlighted Donehue’s ability to foster teamwork and build strong connections within the playing group. “Joel is a calm under pressure operator and will coach from the sidelines in a non-playing capacity,” the team emphasized, indicating a stable leadership approach as they aim for another finals appearance.
Leitchville-Gunbower is one of only two clubs in the HDFNL to appoint a new senior coach for 2026, with Elmore also making a change. The Bombers are poised to continue their momentum after making finals in each of the last three seasons, and Donehue’s leadership is expected to be pivotal in their quest for success.
As the Bombers embark on this new chapter, the community watches closely. The future looks promising as Donehue leads the charge, aiming to build on the team’s solid foundation and push for greater achievements in the upcoming season.
