UPDATE: A significant grass fire is currently raging near Candelo, New South Wales, prompting urgent action from the Rural Fire Service (RFS). As of October 10, 2023, at 11:30 AM, emergency crews are on the scene battling a blaze that has already consumed approximately 39 hectares of land.
The RFS has dispatched 17 fire trucks to combat the fire, which broke out on Kemps Lane. A helicopter was initially supporting ground efforts but has since returned to Cooma. RFS district coordinator Chris Anderson reported that firefighters have successfully halted the forward spread of the fire and are working diligently throughout the evening to contain it fully.
“This is a critical reminder not to become complacent,” Anderson stated, emphasizing the dry conditions in the Bega Valley and surrounding areas, where rain has been scarce for weeks. “Our crews have done a fantastic job, but we face challenging conditions with strong winds across the district.”
Residents in the vicinity have been advised to remain vigilant and prepared as firefighting efforts continue. Authorities highlight that some local residents have effectively prepared their properties, assisting crews in executing their operations more efficiently.
The situation remains dynamic, and residents are encouraged to stay informed via official RFS updates. As the RFS works tirelessly to bring the fire under control, the community’s safety remains a top priority.
