Severe Weather Alert: Hail and Damaging Winds Expected in Brisbane

URGENT UPDATE: Severe weather is on the horizon for Brisbane and surrounding areas in Queensland, with the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) forecasting the likelihood of thunderstorms, hail, and damaging winds this Sunday. Following a scorching Saturday that saw temperatures soar above 30 degrees Celsius, residents should brace for a dramatic shift in weather conditions.

The BoM has confirmed that thunderstorms are expected to develop on Sunday, October 15, 2023, with a predicted high of 33 degrees Celsius. Although rainfall amounts are expected to remain low, the potential for large hail and locally damaging winds poses a significant risk, particularly in the far south-east regions of Queensland.

Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury stated, “We may see some locally damaging winds or large hail across parts of the far south-east.” She added that while Saturday may see the chance of showers or thunderstorms, the main event will unfold on Sunday, with the possibility of storms intensifying during the afternoon or evening.

The weather system generating these storms is linked to lingering low-pressure troughs stretching across northern and central Australia, which are currently producing showers and thunderstorms in various regions, including the Kimberley in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

As the situation develops, the BoM has also indicated a 70 percent chance of rain for Monday, heightening concerns for continued severe weather in the coming days.
