UPDATE: The highly anticipated Rugby 7s tournament in Cairns, scheduled for October 12-13, 2025, is poised to make history with a record 36 teams from across Queensland, the Pacific, New Zealand, and beyond. This thrilling event is expected to attract nearly 2,000 visitors to the region, promising a substantial economic boost of around $3.6 million in visitor spending, according to Cairns Airport CEO Richard Barker.
Barker emphasized the significance of the recent partnership with Fiji Airways, stating, “We expect visitor numbers will deliver around $3.6 million in spending. It’s a celebration of Pacific culture with fierce rivalry on the field and laughter and celebration off it.” The direct flights from Fiji to Cairns, launched just six months ago, have simplified travel for teams and supporters from Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji, paving the way for unprecedented participation.
This tournament, hosted by the Fiji Community Association FNQ (FCAFNQ), is more than just a sporting event; it’s a vibrant showcase of shared Pacific culture and values. FCAFNQ president Ili Cava noted the event’s rapid growth since its inception, stating, “This partnership gives us the opportunity to attract more international sides. It also helps promote Cairns ahead of the 2032 Olympics – as a place to visit, explore and play the game we love.”
As excitement builds, local player Charlyn Harman from the Barron Bullettes highlighted the expanding women’s competition. “It’s definitely growing; we’ve got teams from Townsville and Western Australia coming, and it’s great to see new faces from across the Pacific,” she said. The tournament will feature a $40,000 prize pool, further incentivizing teams to participate.
Mr. Barker added, “Australian teams will hear what a great event this is and come up from Brisbane and Sydney to participate.” With a festive atmosphere expected, this tournament will not only ignite fierce competition but also foster community spirit and connection.
The Rugby 7s tournament in Cairns is set to become a landmark event, attracting rugby enthusiasts and celebrating the cultural richness of the Pacific region. As the countdown begins, all eyes will be on Cairns for this extraordinary gathering of talent, culture, and sport.
